Theodore Jefferson King

When Republicans get worked up, it’s frightening and dangerous. When Democrats do it, it’s fiery and colorful. Dykes gives a fairly level headed account but Greg Sargent’s far left position is pretty much the unofficial mainstream media narrative: Democrats are bumbling and ineffective, Republicans are diabolical. When the Democrats were stonewalling everything George W. Bush tried to do, it was principled opposition. With Republicans, it’s just political expedience - the party of no. The good news is that even with most of the JournoListers in the newspapers and on the airwaves trying desperately to spin things the Democrats’ way, the public is having none of it. America is clearly sick of expensive, intrusive, ineffective government. Sargent’s assertion represents a fundamental disconnect between left and right in America:

“Indeed, Dems would be far better served if they kept calmly repeating that Republicans want government to fail, in order to breed cynicism and to get voters to give up on the idea that government works for them.”

Wrong. The right does not want government to fail, they want it to do less. What the right unfortunately needs is someone to clearly articulate this message and unite the splintered factions in the tea party, libertarian movement, Republican party and conservative circles. We need a leader with Theodore Roosevelt’s backbone and energy, Thomas Jefferson’s commitment to limited, frugal government and Martin Luther King’s extraordinary ability to articulate a revolutionary purpose with a passionate, peaceful and persuasive message. We don’t need a revolution, we need a restoration. The question after November will be, just how much work is it going to take for America to undo the catastrophic disaster left behind by the George W. Bush, Nancy Peolosi, Barack Obama era? It seems almost insurmountable at this point.

Julian Assange

Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday he worries that the leaks won’t stop “until we see someone in an orange jump suit.”

Orange jump suit? This guy should be labeled an enemy combatant and we should be doing everything we can to get him extradited to America and prosecuted as soon as possible. American forces should be instructed to capture or kill him on sight. There’s no room for putting American soldiers on the battle field at risk. Ever.

Krauthammer

July 26th, 2010

Oh, you didn’t know?

“As John Fund reports in the Wall Street Journal, Sens. Jay Rockefeller, Kent Conrad, and Tom Harkin are already looking forward to what they might get passed in a lame-duck session. Among the major items being considered are card check, budget-balancing through major tax hikes, and climate-change legislation involving heavy carbon taxes and regulation.”

This is why I hate reading Charles Krauthammer.

Absolutely Priceless

July 22nd, 2010

Sound familiar?

“Dannehy faulted the Justice Department for firing Iglesias without even bothering to figure out whether complaints about him were true. That indicated ‘an undue sensitivity to politics on the part of DOJ officials who should answer not to partisan politics but to principles of fairness and justice,’ the Justice Department wrote in its letter.”

After two years and who knows how much taxpayer money spent on a witch hunt for criminal wrongdoing in the previous administration, the Obama Justice Department discovers that Bush’s Justice Department was guilty of: exactly what the Obama Agriculture Department just did to Shirley Sherrod. To wit: firing her without first assessing all of the facts and reacting to political pressure rather than what the Obama Justice Department describes as “the principles of fairness and justice.”

Hilarious.

Commulism

Jonah Goldberg’s take

“He says he received the video in its edited form and I believe him. But the relevant question is, Would he have done the same thing over again if he had seen the full video from the outset?”

Actually, the relevant question is: why would any journalist run an edited copy of a video before checking to see if there was a full version - and watching the full version? Speaking of which, check out the NAACP “full” video between 20:50 and 20:59. Clearly, this one is also edited:

NAACP “full” version

Whatever is edited out there is anyone’s guess. Either way, this is another example of hasty conclusions clouding the real issue - much like Sarah Palin and her inaccurate criticism of Ezekiel Emanuel’s death panel comments. Some of what Sherrod says here about race is encouraging but the discouraging comment comes at 18:20:

“That’s when it was revealed to me that it’s about poor vs. those who have.”

This is Sherrod’s supposed heartfelt revelation? It’s not about black vs. white at all… it’s about rich vs. poor! There’s the bad guy! Rich people!

Why does it have to be about anyone vs. anyone? The left is constantly looking for someone to blame for someone else’s problems. Poor people are poor because of rich people. Later she says rich people want to “hold onto their power.” Fair enough. Wealth and success breed conservatism; the word “conservatism” in this context meaning not necessarily political ideology but the desire to preserve one’s wealth, power, success, accomplishment, etc. It’s a natural and very human tendency. The fallacy with Sherrod’s assessment is her underlying assumption that this desire to preserve one’s position must come at the expense of someone else. Wealth and luxury are static and finite and only a certain amount of people can achieve them. Therefore, the “fair” way to do things is to divide it up equally.

This is absurd and it’s exactly how most in the Obama administration view the world. They hate being called socialists, communists or fascists. Fine. What they really believe in is some unholy amalgamation of socialism, communism and crony capitalism. Let’s call it commulism.

Obama allegedly “believes” in free markets but he’s put the full force of his bloated administration towards destroying wealth in the mistaken assumption that he’s dividing it up more equally. The axiom of commulism is: “markets are good but only if they produce the various outcomes government czars and officials intend.” See for example: light bulbs, automobiles, energy consumption, banking decisions, health care, food consumption, etc. This approach of course defeats the purpose of the free market but commulists delude themselves into believing they still stand for capitalism because they accomplish their objectives through “friendly” force - as opposed to naked, Fidel Castro style force (Goldberg calls it liberal fascism).

Here’s a perfect example of commulism in action:

“U.S. House Democrats criticized airlines Wednesday for increasingly charging for checked baggage, seat selection and other services, and indicated they are considering legislation to tax the revenue collected from the fees.”

It’s not fair that airlines are charging all of these inflated fees to consumers so Democrats in Congress want to solve the problem by taxing the income airlines receive from the fees. How eloquently idiotic. Once again, the assumption is adversarial: airlines created the fee model to hurt their consumers. Government solves this problem by taking more for itself in the name of “the people.” Obviously, the airlines are looking to generate more income. If Congress dents this income by taxing it, which of the following scenarios is more likely:

1. The airlines admit their mistake, apologize and decide to get rid of the fees.

2. The airlines either increase their fees, increase their ticket prices, move the charges to some other area of their business model or enact cuts in other areas (safety for example) so they can continue to maintain their profit margins.

This is the nature of the free market. The way to get business to cut fees is to reduce costs, not increase them. If Democrats could find a constructive way to help airlines reduce costs (simplify burdensome and redundant regulations, enact policies to reduce energy costs, reduce taxes on the airlines, etc.) perhaps we would see the fees disappear. Instead, the administration and the majority in Congress have taken precisely the opposite approach. They’ve chosen at every juncture to villainize and punish private industry in an effort to force the outcomes they believe should happen. As Shirley Sherrod demonstrates above, they’ve just identified a different bad guy. They’ve found an alternative way to divide the citizens they allegedly seek to help.

A few minutes later in her speech, Sherrod goes into a painfully simplistic narrative about indentured servitude and the alleged origins of racism. Evil “elites” sinisterly “created the racism that we know of today … they did it to keep us divided.” Sherrod announces that we have to get that (racism) “out of our heads” because the only real difference between us is that “the folks with money want to stay in power.” Thus, she accomplishes precisely what she accuses previous generations of cynically trying to do: she divides the population along arbitrary lines of distinction.

Sherrod’s revelation - much like the administration she recently departed - was not that everyone should be working together. It’s that we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be divided by race. Instead, we should allow ourselves to be divided by wealth. To which this blog respectfully responds: What the hell’s the difference?

Hypocrisy

Bigotry?

“We felt the time had come to stand up and say, ‘It’s time for the tea party to be responsible members of this democracy and make sure they don’t tolerate bigots or bigotry among their members,’” NAACP President Ben Jealous said ahead of the debate.

Really? Is the N.A.A.C.P. going to denounce the blatant bigotry of well known black activists such as Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson? Yeah, didn’t think so. There’s no doubt that there are undesirable elements within the Tea Party movement - just as there are undesirable elements within any political organization. Why is it that left wing organizations are never held to a similar standard? Ask ironically named Ben Jealous. Good luck getting a credible answer.

Rights, fairness, entitlement… Yawn.

Nit picking

“The events reported overnight in Connecticut reinforce my belief that passengers have rights and are entitled to fair treatment when they fly,”

I know this is nit picking but why can’t these guys just say “The airlines should not be permitted to trap passengers on an airplane for extended periods. We’re going to do what we can to resolve the issue.” Period. Everything with the Obama administration seems to center around vapid platitudes about rights or fairness. What does it mean to say “passengers have rights and are entitled to fair treatment?” For one thing, if everyone routinely gets trapped on an airplane for 12 hour stretches, that’s fair treatment. It absolutely shouldn’t happen but equality of misery is still equality. Second, passengers aren’t “entitled” to any “rights” when they fly. People should not be imprisoned against their will for extended periods for any reason. That’s not some “right” that you qualify for should you suddenly decide to fly and it’s not something that the government can choose to grant or deny at their pleasure. It’s simple human decency and it applies whether Ray Lahood chooses to recognize it or not.

Screw the NRA

June 22nd, 2010

Tits on a bull

“The NRA is a non-partisan, single-issue organization made up of millions of individual members dedicated to the protection of the Second Amendment. We do not represent the interests of other organizations. That’s their responsibility. Our responsibility is to protect and defend the interests of our members. And that we do without apology.”

If you are a member of the NRA, cancel your membership. The Second Amendment has no value without the larger context of the entire Constitution. If the NRA’s purpose is merely to protect the interests of its members, then they also have no value. Basically, this is a doctor walking by a man suffering from a heart attack in the street and announcing “I’m on lunch break.” The Second Amendment is not a “single issue” and those who pursue it as such are no different than the teacher’s unions or ACORN. They do harm to the Constitution and by extension to the Second Amendment they claim to support.

If you don’t know what H.R. 5175 is, take a look. Not only has the NRA ceased opposing this bill, they’ve taken a bribe from Congress that will exclude them from jurisdiction. So, the government can force other organizations to disclose their donors but the NRA will be exempt. As long as they are, that’s fine with the NRA. They’re more than happy to look the other way while other less organized or represented groups of citizens are abused under the law. Don’t buy their cynical attempt to hide behind the outstanding men and women who serve in our armed forces or law enforcement agencies. That is a red herring attempting to divert your eyes from the fact that they care only about one thing, and it isn’t the Second Amendment. Nobody is asking the NRA to take up the cause of other organizations. However, when you withhold criticism of a bill you’ve clearly described as a “draconian” measure designed to “intimidate speech” because Congress has bribed you to keep your mouth shut, you’re not serving any cause at all.

My message to Chris Cox and the rest of the NRA is this: Take your seven pieces of silver and shove them up your ass. I’ll keep my shotgun anyway.

Joe Barton for President

June 17th, 2010

Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

“Barton is the biggest recipient of oil and gas industry campaign contributions in the House of Representatives, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
Its data showed that Barton has collected $1,447,880 from political action committees and individuals connected with the oil and gas industry since 1989.”

Oh, well that dismisses any comments he might have made. Obviously he’s in the back pocket of Big Oil (love the usage of CAPS on that one). That assumption is precisely the reason why those “facts” are presented in the story in such a manner. They’re intended as a repudiation - to make the reader think that anyone in their right mind would draw the same conclusions. The implication is that only someone who takes money from “Big Oil” would make such a preposterous statement. Meanwhile, Obama took plenty of campaign funding from BP but his sins are absolved and ignored because he’s genuflected before the altar of populist fury. Way to go Commander.

The fact of the matter is that Representative Barton is one of the few voices on the Hill speaking the truth right now. Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for not standing up for the principles that they allegedly espouse. It’s nice that Boehner and company want to get re-elected but hiding behind the President’s skirt is not the way to do it. President Obama’s preposterous fund is absolutely a shameful shakedown of private industry and it demonstrates utter contempt for the Constitution, the separation of powers and the Rule of Law. In the interest of full disclosure let me just confirm: this blog receives no money from BP, Exxon Mobile, Enron, Cobra Commander, Rush Limbaugh or any other evil contributors. I still think President Obama’s slush fund is a joke.

The decision of course is no surprise coming from President Caesar - who adheres to no law that does not fit his political agenda. It so happens that this time he found a way to align his disdain for the Constitution with his need to quell the populist rage against his administration; and that makes it all the more loathsome. Julius Caesar himself would be proud. It’s a fairly brilliant stroke of politics. As for the damage it does to the Constitution and the separation of powers… well, who cares? Off with their heads!

Unforgivable

June 9th, 2010

So let me get this straight.  North Korea torpedoes and sinks a South Korean ship in cold blood - an act of war by almost any conceivable measure.  The world stands idly by.  Other than some vapid grandstanding from Hillary Clinton, the United States has done nothing to counter this naked and reckless act of tyranny against our close ally.

Meanwhile, Turkish “peace activists” refuse Israel’s offer to allow them to dock at an Israelil port, be inspected for arms and let their cargo of peaceful supplies into Gaza.  Instead, they illegally cross an Israeli blockade and then proceed to peacefully beat and stab Israeli commandos who board the flotilla in a legal effort to defend their own border.  These peace loving innocents even throw one commando overboard - perhaps a sort of physical gesture of their peaceful agenda.  The commandos - in fear of their life from these peaceful protesters - dispense with their paintball guns and use real ones.  The world is outraged.

Where is the President?  Where is the Secretary of State?  In less than two years, this administration has managed to completely isolate Israel - without any doubt our most important ally on this planet.  The Obama administration has made some abominable decisions during its two year run:

Barack Obama’s World Appeasement Tour set the tone for his administration’s weak pseudo-philosophy of appeasement and what the President mistakes for empathy.

As actual peace protesters in Iran struggled for freedom, this President stood idly by.  His diplomatic hubris and approval rating were more important than the lives of Iranian revolutionaries fighting for their freedom and their lives.

This President allowed the President of Mexico to come before Congress, criticize an American state and lecture Americans about how we treat our illegal immigrants.  Never mind the horrid treatment immigrants to Mexico face nor is there any thought of the barbaric slaughter going on between rival drug gangs under Felipe Calderon’s administration - except of course to blame guns in America.

Obama’s effort to halt Iranian nuclear proliferation has been a complete and utter fiasco.

Instead of denouncing the anti-Semitic charade taking place on the UN Human Rights Council, Obama took a seat on it.

Remember Darfur?  Neither does the President.

Remember Guantanamo Bay?  See above.

This President has been swindled by the Russians, bullied by the Turks, embarrassed by the Brazilians, insulted by the French, rebuffed in Copenhagen, marginalized in the United Nations…

All of these gaffes over the past 2 years have been ugly.   But this?  Isolating Israel and ignoring the security of the Jewish state will disrupt the balance of power in the Middle East to the detriment of the entire world - most especially the Jewish people.  How many Jews have to die before this planet learns that anti-Semitic hatred is real, virulent and the enemy of peace?  Israel faces enemies who are committed to the “annihilation” of Israel.  They believe the Holocaust during World War II - which saw the systematic slaughter of six million Jews - is fabricated.  Thousands of rockets have been fired into Israeli neighborhoods, which is why the blockade exists in the first place.  What would the United States do if Mexico was repeatedly firing rockets into the suburbs of California?  Cede them Texas?

President Obama’s flaccid moral relativism thus far has been appalling as foreign policy.  His abandonment of Israel is unforgivable.
